These are not quotes: capacity, boiler type, piping, venting, controls, fuel work, access, permits and the authorized scope determine the written price.
They may describe different projects. One may be an equipment swap; another may include near-boiler repiping, pumps, valves, controls, chimney or vent work, an indirect water heater, electrical work, permits, removal or other corrections. Normalize exact equipment and responsibility line by line.
The old input rating is evidence, not a complete sizing method. Home changes, prior oversizing, radiation, distribution type and domestic-hot-water duty can affect the selection. Ask the contractor to state the capacity and sizing or connected-radiation method used.
If the failure is unknown, begin with a diagnosis. Compare the known repair, equipment and piping condition, safety findings, coverage, comfort history, future plans and a complete installed replacement proposal. Age and a fixed repair-percentage rule do not decide every home.
No single boiler type fits every distribution system. Condensing performance depends on system design and return-water temperature, and the project may require different venting, drainage, piping and controls. Compare the complete design and expected operating conditions, not AFUE alone.
Do not assume. The proposal should identify permit and inspection responsibility; chimney, liner or sidewall-vent work; combustion air; fuel and electrical work; removal and disposal; exclusions; and any restoration or other-trade responsibility.
The current IRS Form 5695 instructions state that the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit cannot be claimed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. A 2026 proposal should not subtract the former federal 25C credit. Any current utility or manufacturer program has separate rules and should be confirmed for the exact project.
