Oil Boiler Tune-Up and Flue Cleaning in Franklin Square

A tune-up and flue cleaning on a New Yorker oil boiler found a soot-packed chimney connector and a sludged oil filter.

    Before
A section of the flue connector, its open end packed solid with soot and debris. Exhaust has to pass through here to reach the chimney.
    After
Flue pipe off: the boiler's flue outlet is opened up so the connector to the chimney can be cleaned and inspected.

    The problem

The visit was a boiler tune-up plus a flue cleaning and inspection on an oil-fired New Yorker boiler with a Beckett burner. Two things turned up once the equipment was opened. With the flue pipe off, the connector that carries exhaust to the chimney was packed with soot and debris, solid across its open end. Inside the oil filter housing, the element was caked in sludge. Soot left in the flue path narrows the route combustion gases need to leave the house, so a tune-up is the right time to clear it.

    Our solution

We tuned up the New Yorker boiler and its Beckett burner. For the flue cleaning and inspection, we took the flue pipe off the boiler's flue outlet, cleaned and inspected the flue pipe and chimney connector, and removed the soot. A drop cloth went down in front of the boiler to catch it. We also opened the oil filter housing and documented the element inside, which was caked in sludge.

    The result

In June 2026 the boiler and burner were tuned up, and the flue pipe and chimney connector were cleaned, inspected and cleared of soot. The soot in the flue and the sludge in the oil filter were both found and photographed during the tune-up.

    Serviced

    • New Yorker CL3-140-W oil-fired boiler (serviced)
    • Beckett oil burner (serviced)
    • Beckett CleanCut A2EA-6527 oil pump on the burner

    Highlights

    • Boiler and Beckett burner tuned up; flue pipe and chimney connector cleaned and inspected
    • Flue connector to the chimney found packed solid with soot and debris at its open end
    • Soot removed from the flue pipe and chimney connector
    • Oil filter housing opened; the element inside was caked in sludge
    • Flue service includes a draft test and a carbon monoxide safety check
    • Drop cloth laid in front of the boiler to catch soot

    Scope of work

    1. 01Tuned up the New Yorker oil-fired boiler and its Beckett burner
    2. 02Tune-up covered the heat exchanger, combustion, system water pressure and venting
    3. 03Took the flue pipe off the boiler's flue outlet for access
    4. 04Cleaned and inspected the flue pipe and chimney connector, removing the soot
    5. 05Draft test and carbon monoxide safety check, part of the flue cleaning and inspection service
    6. 06Opened the oil filter housing and documented the sludge-coated element
    7. 07Laid a drop cloth in front of the boiler to catch soot
    • The New Yorker oil-fired boiler and its Beckett burner, with a drop cloth down to catch soot during the service.
    • The burner's Beckett CleanCut A2EA-6527 oil pump, photographed during the tune-up.
    • A short round flue fitting set on top of the boiler, filled with soot and debris flakes.
    • The oil filter element, out of its housing and caked in sludge. It sits in a pan of dark oil, with a black cover set aside on a rag.
    • Parts pulled during the service: a sludge-coated filter element, a gasket and a mesh strainer, sitting in a pan of dark oil.
