    HVAC Glossary for Long Island Homeowners

    Every term below is one you may see on an HVAC proposal, a rebate form, an invoice, or a permit. Each entry opens with a one-sentence answer, then explains what the term changes about your project, with Long Island specifics where the local climate, coastal exposure, or PSEG Long Island program rules matter.

    A

    AFUE

    Efficiency

    Also written as: Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency

    AFUE is the percentage of fuel a furnace or boiler turns into usable heat over a full heating season.

    Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency measures seasonal combustion efficiency. An 80% AFUE furnace sends about 20% of the fuel energy out the flue; a 95% AFUE condensing unit sends about 5%. AFUE does not account for duct losses or distribution problems, so a high-AFUE furnace on leaky ducts can still waste heat.

    On Long Island: Condensing equipment needs PVC venting and a condensate drain, which is often the deciding cost on older Long Island homes with masonry chimneys.

    AHRI certificate

    Also written as: AHRI reference number, matched rating

    An AHRI certificate documents the tested efficiency and capacity of one specific indoor and outdoor equipment match.

    The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute publishes a reference number for each certified combination of outdoor unit, indoor coil or air handler, and in some cases the thermostat. Rebates and warranties reference that matched rating, not the highest number the equipment family can reach.

    On Long Island: PSEG Long Island rebate paperwork asks for the AHRI reference number, so request it before you sign a proposal.

    Air handler

    Equipment

    Also written as: fan coil, indoor unit

    An air handler is the indoor cabinet holding the blower and evaporator coil in an electric or heat-pump system.

    It moves conditioned air through the duct system and, in a heat pump, usually contains the supplemental electric heat strips. It is the electric-system counterpart to a gas furnace, which serves the same blower role in a fossil-fuel system.

    Air scrubber / UV treatment

    Air Quality

    Air scrubbers and UV lamps are add-on devices intended to reduce microbial growth and odors inside the duct system.

    UV lamps are most effective aimed at the coil and drain pan, where biofilm actually grows. These are supplements to filtration and ventilation, not substitutes, and results depend heavily on placement and maintenance.

    Airflow (CFM)

    Sizing & Design

    Also written as: cubic feet per minute

    CFM is the volume of air a system moves per minute, and cooling systems generally need roughly 350–400 CFM per ton.

    Measured airflow determines capacity, dehumidification, and coil temperature. Too little airflow freezes coils and cuts capacity; too much airflow leaves the home clammy in summer because the coil never gets cold enough to wring out moisture.

    Auxiliary / emergency heat

    Controls

    Also written as: aux heat, backup heat, em heat

    Auxiliary heat is the backup electric or fuel heat a heat pump calls on when it cannot meet the load alone.

    Aux heat runs automatically below the balance point or during fast recovery from a setback. Emergency heat is a manual mode that locks out the compressor entirely and should only be used when the heat pump has failed, because resistance heat is far more expensive to run.

    On Long Island: Big January electric bills on Long Island heat pumps are usually an aux-heat staging or thermostat setup problem, not a failed compressor.

    B

    Balance point

    Sizing & Design

    The balance point is the outdoor temperature at which a heat pump's output exactly equals the home's heat loss.

    Above the balance point the heat pump carries the house alone. Below it the system needs supplemental heat, so the balance point drives both winter comfort and operating cost, and it is set by equipment selection plus the home's insulation and air sealing.

    On Long Island: Long Island sits in Climate Zone 4A with roughly a 15°F winter design temperature, so a properly selected cold-climate heat pump can often carry the house into the low teens.

    Blower motor (ECM vs PSC)

    Also written as: ECM motor, variable-speed blower

    The blower motor drives indoor airflow; an ECM motor varies speed efficiently while an older PSC motor runs at fixed taps.

    Electronically commutated motors adjust torque to hold target airflow, use far less electricity at low speed, and enable long low-stage run times. Permanent split capacitor motors run at set speeds and lose airflow as duct resistance rises.

    Boiler lockout

    Also written as: hard lockout, fault code

    A boiler lockout is a safety shutdown that stops the burner and requires a reset after the fault is corrected.

    Common causes are ignition failure, low water pressure, blocked condensate, flame sensing problems, and flue obstruction. Repeated resets without diagnosis mask a fault that will keep returning, usually on the coldest night.

    BTU

    Sizing & Design

    Also written as: British Thermal Unit, BTUh

    A BTU is the standard unit of heat energy, and 12,000 BTU per hour equals one ton of cooling capacity.

    Residential equipment is rated in BTU per hour. Furnaces and boilers list input and output BTU, and the output is the number that matters for sizing because it already accounts for combustion efficiency.

    C

    Carbon monoxide (CO)

    Service & Diagnostics

    Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas from incomplete combustion that a cracked heat exchanger or blocked flue can push into the home.

    Any fuel-burning appliance can produce CO when combustion air, venting, or the heat exchanger fails. Working CO alarms on every level are the baseline protection, and an alarm sounding is an evacuate-then-call situation, not a service scheduling question.

    Cold-climate heat pump

    Also written as: ccASHP, hyper-heat

    A cold-climate heat pump is an inverter-driven system engineered to hold rated heating capacity well below freezing.

    These systems publish capacity at 5°F and often to -13°F, unlike standard heat pumps whose output collapses in the 20s. Rebate programs maintain qualified product lists, and only listed models earn the higher incentives.

    On Long Island: Cold-climate models are the practical choice for a whole-home Long Island conversion where you want minimal auxiliary heat.

    Combustion analysis

    Also written as: flue gas analysis

    Combustion analysis measures flue gases to verify a furnace or boiler is burning safely and efficiently.

    A technician samples oxygen, carbon monoxide, stack temperature, and draft with a calibrated analyzer, then adjusts gas pressure or oil nozzle and air settings. It is the only way to prove combustion is safe rather than assume it.

    Commissioning

    Also written as: startup report

    Commissioning is the measured startup that proves a new system actually performs the way it was designed to.

    It records refrigerant charge, airflow, static pressure, temperature split, gas pressure or electrical draw, safety checks, and control configuration. Two identical systems can perform very differently depending on whether this step was done and documented.

    Condensate drain

    Also written as: drain pan, condensate pump

    The condensate drain carries water the coil removes from indoor air out of the home, and clogs are a top cause of AC water leaks.

    The system includes the primary pan and line, a trap, often a secondary pan with a float switch, and a pump when gravity drainage is not possible. Annual clearing plus a working float switch is what prevents ceiling damage.

    Condenser

    Also written as: outdoor unit, compressor unit

    The condenser is the outdoor section of a split system that rejects heat outside during cooling.

    It houses the compressor, outdoor coil, and fan. In a heat pump the same outdoor unit reverses in winter to absorb heat from outdoor air and deliver it indoors.

    On Long Island: Coastal salt exposure shortens outdoor coil life, so coil coatings and shoreline setback matter on the South Shore.

    Condensing furnace

    Also written as: 90+ furnace, high-efficiency furnace

    A condensing furnace has a second heat exchanger that pulls extra heat from the exhaust, reaching 90%+ AFUE.

    Because the flue gases cool enough to condense, the unit vents through PVC sidewall piping and produces acidic condensate that needs a drain and often a neutralizer. That venting and drainage work is what separates a straight swap from a more involved retrofit.

    COP

    Efficiency

    Also written as: Coefficient of Performance

    COP is the ratio of heat delivered to electricity consumed at one specific operating condition.

    A COP of 3 means three units of heat per unit of electricity. COP falls as outdoor temperature drops, which is why a single COP figure means little without the temperature it was measured at.

    D

    Design temperature

    Sizing & Design

    Also written as: outdoor design conditions, 99% design temp

    Design temperature is the outdoor condition a system is sized to handle, roughly 15°F winter and 86°F summer on Long Island.

    Load calculations use these statistical extremes rather than record highs and lows, because sizing to the record forces oversizing that hurts comfort in normal weather. A design-temperature figure should appear on any Manual J report.

    Diagnostic fee

    A diagnostic fee covers the trip and the technician time to test the system and identify the actual fault before any repair is quoted.

    It is separate from repair pricing, which should be presented for approval before work begins. Diagnosis on a no-cool or no-heat call typically includes electrical testing, airflow and pressure checks, and safety verification.

    Dual fuel (hybrid) system

    Also written as: hybrid heat

    A dual-fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas or oil furnace and switches between them based on temperature or cost.

    The heat pump handles mild and moderate weather at high efficiency, and the furnace takes over when it becomes the cheaper or more capable source. Switchover setup is where most of the savings live.

    On Long Island: Popular on Long Island as a lower-risk first step for homes with a serviceable furnace and no interest in a full electrification project yet.

    Ductless mini-split

    Equipment

    Also written as: mini-split, ductless system

    A ductless mini-split connects an outdoor inverter unit to one or more indoor heads by refrigerant lines instead of ducts.

    Each indoor wall, ceiling, or floor unit is its own zone with its own setpoint. Multi-zone systems share one outdoor unit, which saves space but can reduce low-load efficiency compared with separate single-zone systems.

    On Long Island: Common on Long Island for additions, finished attics, sunrooms, and older homes with no duct system at all.

    E

    Economizer

    Controls

    An economizer is a damper and control assembly that uses cool outdoor air for free cooling on commercial rooftop units.

    When outdoor conditions are suitable it opens outdoor air dampers and reduces compressor run time. Stuck dampers and failed sensors are a common cause of high commercial energy bills and poor ventilation.

    EER2

    Efficiency

    EER2 measures cooling efficiency at a single hot design condition rather than averaged across a season.

    It predicts peak-day performance better than a seasonal rating, which matters for July afternoon load and for peak electric demand. Read it alongside SEER2 rather than instead of it.

    ERV / HRV

    Air Quality

    Also written as: energy recovery ventilator, heat recovery ventilator

    An ERV or HRV brings in filtered outdoor air and exhausts stale indoor air while recovering most of the energy in between.

    An HRV transfers heat only; an ERV also transfers moisture, which helps keep winter air from getting too dry and limits summer humidity gain. Tight homes need mechanical ventilation because they no longer leak enough on their own.

    Evaporator coil

    Also written as: indoor coil, A-coil

    The evaporator coil is the indoor coil where refrigerant absorbs heat and moisture from the air passing over it.

    It sits above the furnace or inside the air handler and drains condensate to a pan and line. Dirty coils, low airflow, or low charge cause icing, water leaks, and lost capacity.

    F

    Federal tax credit (25C)

    Costs & Rebates

    The residential 25C energy efficient home improvement credit ended after 2025 and is not available for 2026 installations.

    Proposals that still advertise a 30% federal credit on residential HVAC are using outdated information. Utility incentives such as the PSEG Long Island programs are the current path to reducing project cost.

    Financing term and APR

    Costs & Rebates

    Financing term is the number of months of payments and APR is the annualized cost of borrowing, including promotional periods.

    Deferred-interest promotions charge accrued interest retroactively if the balance is not paid within the promo window, while reduced-APR plans spread a fixed cost. Compare total cost of the plan, not just the monthly payment.

    Flue / venting

    Install & Compliance

    The flue is the path that carries combustion gases safely out of the home, and its material and sizing depend on the appliance efficiency.

    Mid-efficiency appliances use metal venting into a lined chimney, while condensing appliances use sealed PVC through a sidewall. Removing one appliance from a shared chimney can orphan another and require a liner to keep draft correct.

    On Long Island: Chimney relining is a common added line item on Long Island when a high-efficiency furnace leaves the water heater alone on an oversized masonry flue.

    H

    Heat exchanger

    Equipment

    A heat exchanger transfers heat from combustion gases to the air or water in your home without mixing the two.

    In a furnace it is a sealed metal chamber the blower moves air across; in a boiler it heats water. Cracks or corrosion allow combustion gases into the living space, which is a replacement-level failure rather than a repair.

    Heat pump

    Equipment

    A heat pump moves heat instead of creating it, cooling in summer and reversing to heat the home in winter.

    Because it transports heat rather than burning fuel, it can deliver several times more heat energy than the electrical energy it consumes. It replaces both the air conditioner and, in many homes, most or all of the heating system.

    Heat pump water heater (HPWH)

    Also written as: hybrid water heater

    A heat pump water heater pulls heat from surrounding air into the tank, using far less electricity than resistance elements.

    It needs adequate air volume around it, a condensate path, and tolerance for cooler, drier air in the space it sits in. Most units include resistance backup for high-demand periods.

    On Long Island: PSEG Long Island currently offers a $1,000–$1,200 instant incentive on qualifying units.

    HSPF2

    Efficiency

    HSPF2 is a heat pump's seasonal heating output in BTU per watt-hour under the current test procedure.

    Higher HSPF2 means lower seasonal heating electricity use for the same delivered heat. Like SEER2, HSPF2 numbers read lower than the older HSPF ratings for identical equipment because the test conditions changed.

    Humidity control

    Air Quality

    Also written as: latent removal, dehumidification

    Humidity control is the system's ability to hold indoor relative humidity near 45–55% while meeting temperature setpoint.

    Cooling removes moisture only while the coil runs cold and air moves slowly across it, so oversized single-stage equipment cools fast and leaves the house clammy. Variable-speed systems and correct airflow are what fix the muggy-but-cold complaint.

    On Long Island: Coastal Long Island summers are humidity-driven, so dehumidification performance often matters more than raw tonnage.

    I

    Indirect water heater

    Equipment

    An indirect water heater is a storage tank heated by hot water circulated from the boiler through an internal coil.

    It has no burner of its own and depends on the boiler for recovery, which makes it efficient in homes with a well-matched modern boiler. Boiler replacement decisions and water heater decisions are therefore linked.

    Inverter / variable-speed

    Equipment

    Also written as: modulating, variable capacity

    Inverter equipment varies compressor and blower output continuously instead of cycling on and off at one fixed capacity.

    Long low-speed run times improve humidity control, temperature stability, and noise, and they cut electrical draw at part load. Most of a year's operating hours are part-load hours, which is where these systems earn their premium.

    L

    Labor warranty vs parts warranty

    Costs & Rebates

    Parts warranties come from the manufacturer and cover components, while labor warranties come from the contractor and cover the work to install them.

    A ten-year parts warranty generally requires registration within a set window after installation. Without a labor warranty, a covered part can still leave you paying diagnostic and installation labor years later, so read both terms together.

    Latent vs sensible capacity

    Sizing & Design

    Sensible capacity lowers air temperature while latent capacity removes moisture, and equipment selection splits the total between them.

    Manual S selection matches the sensible and latent split to what the home actually needs at design conditions. A system with plenty of total capacity but low latent capability will run short cycles and leave humidity high.

    Line set

    Install & Compliance

    Also written as: refrigerant lines

    The line set is the insulated pair of copper refrigerant lines connecting the outdoor unit to the indoor coil.

    Length, diameter, vertical rise, and cleanliness all affect capacity and compressor life. Reusing an old line set with a new refrigerant requires flushing or replacement, and shortcuts here cause failures years later.

    Load calculation (Manual J)

    Also written as: heat loss / heat gain calculation

    Manual J is the ACCA method that calculates a home's true heating and cooling loads from its actual construction.

    It accounts for orientation, insulation, glazing, infiltration, and internal gains instead of sizing by square footage. It is the input to Manual S equipment selection and Manual D duct design.

    On Long Island: PSEG-LI heat pump incentives require equipment sized to 100–120% of the Manual J load, so the calculation is a rebate requirement, not just best practice.

    M

    Make-up air

    Air Quality

    Also written as: MUA, kitchen make-up air

    Make-up air replaces the air an exhaust system removes so the building does not go negative and pull air in through doors and flues.

    Commercial kitchens with large hood exhaust need tempered replacement air, or doors get hard to open, hoods stop capturing, and combustion appliances can backdraft. Balance between exhaust and make-up is checked by measurement, not assumption.

    Manual D

    Sizing & Design

    Manual D is the duct design method that sizes trunks, branches, and returns to deliver each room's required airflow.

    It works from the Manual J room-by-room loads and the blower's available static pressure. Undersized returns are the single most common cause of noise, high static pressure, and uneven temperatures in retrofit systems.

    Manual S

    Sizing & Design

    Manual S is the method for selecting certified equipment that matches the Manual J loads at local design conditions.

    It checks capacity at your design temperatures, not at the nameplate rating, and it verifies the sensible and latent split. This is the step that prevents a nominal three-ton unit from being wrong for a three-ton load.

    MERV

    Air Quality

    MERV is a 1–16 scale describing how well an air filter captures particles, with MERV 11–13 the usual residential target.

    Higher MERV captures finer particles but adds resistance, so the filter must have enough surface area and the duct system enough capacity. A 4-inch media cabinet delivers MERV 13 filtration at far lower pressure drop than a 1-inch filter of the same rating.

    N

    Nitrogen purge brazing

    Install & Compliance

    Nitrogen purging flows inert gas through refrigerant lines while brazing so no oxidation scale forms inside the tubing.

    Without it, copper oxide flakes circulate and damage the compressor and metering device. It is invisible after the fact, which is exactly why it separates careful installations from fast ones.

    O

    Oversizing

    Sizing & Design

    Oversizing is installing more capacity than the load requires, which causes short cycling, humidity problems, and higher cost.

    The habit comes from replacing like-for-like or sizing by square footage rather than by load. Correct practice sizes cooling close to the calculated load and lets variable-speed equipment handle extremes at higher stages.

    P

    Permit and inspection

    Most equipment replacements on Long Island require a municipal mechanical or electrical permit and a final inspection.

    Permits document that venting, gas piping, electrical, and condensate work meet code. Unpermitted work can surface at resale, complicate insurance claims, and disqualify some rebate submissions.

    On Long Island: Requirements and fees vary by town and village across Nassau County and Western Suffolk, so confirm which authority has jurisdiction for your address.

    PSEG Long Island rebate

    Costs & Rebates

    Also written as: Home Comfort program, utility incentive

    PSEG Long Island's Home Comfort program pays incentives for qualifying heat pumps and heat pump water heaters installed by a Participating Partner.

    Heat pump incentives are currently structured as a $4,000 market-rate flat incentive or $7,500 for income-qualified households, with equipment sized to 100–120% of the Manual J load. Heat pump water heaters carry a $1,000–$1,200 instant incentive. Program terms change, so confirm current rules before you sign.

    R

    R-410A and R-454B

    Equipment

    Also written as: A2L refrigerant, Puron Advance

    R-410A is the refrigerant in most systems from the last two decades, and R-454B is the lower-GWP A2L replacement in new equipment.

    R-454B is mildly flammable, which changes leak detection, service practices, and some equipment placement rules. The two are not interchangeable in the same system, and mixed-refrigerant repairs are not an option.

    Refrigerant leak

    Service & Diagnostics

    A refrigerant leak is a physical breach in the sealed system, and adding refrigerant without finding it is a temporary fix.

    Symptoms include icing, weak cooling, and long run times. Proper diagnosis locates the leak with electronic detection, dye, or pressure testing, then weighs repair value against the age and refrigerant type of the system.

    RTU (rooftop unit)

    Equipment

    Also written as: packaged unit

    An RTU is a packaged commercial unit with compressors, coils, blower, and often gas heat in one rooftop cabinet.

    It mounts on a curb and connects to a duct drop through the roof. RTUs are the standard for strip malls, offices, and restaurants, and curb adapters and crane access drive much of replacement cost.

    S

    SEER2

    Efficiency

    SEER2 is seasonal cooling efficiency in BTU per watt-hour under the current M1 test procedure.

    SEER2 values run roughly 4.5% lower than the older SEER numbers for the same equipment because the test uses higher external static pressure that better reflects real duct systems. Compare SEER2 to SEER2 only.

    Setback and recovery

    Controls

    Also written as: smart schedule, night setback

    Setback is lowering or raising the thermostat when the home is empty or asleep, and recovery is the run time needed to return to setpoint.

    Deep setbacks save fuel on furnaces and boilers, but on heat pumps a large setback can trigger expensive auxiliary heat during recovery. Adaptive recovery settings solve most of that.

    Short cycling

    Short cycling is when equipment starts and stops in unusually brief runs, which wastes energy and wears out components.

    Causes include oversizing, restricted airflow, incorrect charge, thermostat placement, and safety controls tripping. Diagnosis starts with whether the system is stopping on setpoint or on a limit.

    Smart thermostat

    Controls

    A smart thermostat adds scheduling, remote control, and staging logic, and on heat pumps it needs correct equipment configuration.

    The savings come from staging and setback behavior, not from the app. Heat pumps in particular need aux-heat lockouts and compressor staging set correctly, or the thermostat will run resistance heat far more than necessary.

    Static pressure

    Also written as: total external static pressure, TESP

    Static pressure is the resistance ducts, filter, and coil present to airflow, measured in inches of water column.

    Most residential equipment is rated at 0.5 in. w.c., and many existing systems measure well above that. High static pressure starves airflow, cuts capacity, and shortens blower and compressor life, so measuring it before quoting equipment is basic diligence.

    Superheat and subcooling

    Superheat and subcooling are the temperature measurements technicians use to verify refrigerant charge is correct.

    Superheat applies to fixed-orifice systems and subcooling to TXV systems; both compare measured line temperatures to saturation temperature at the operating pressure. Charging by gauge pressure alone or by beer-can-cold feel leads to undercharged or overcharged systems.

    T

    Ton / tonnage

    Sizing & Design

    A ton equals 12,000 BTU per hour of cooling capacity, so a three-ton system removes about 36,000 BTU/hr at rated conditions.

    Nominal tonnage is a label, not a measured output; actual capacity varies with outdoor temperature, airflow, and the matched indoor coil. Sizing should come from a load calculation rather than from the tonnage of the old unit.

    Two-stage

    Equipment

    Two-stage equipment runs at a reduced first stage most of the time and full capacity only in extreme weather.

    It is the middle option between single-stage and fully variable-speed systems, delivering longer run times and better humidity control than single-stage at lower cost than inverter equipment.

    V

    Vacuum / micron level

    Install & Compliance

    Also written as: evacuation, pulling a vacuum

    Evacuation pulls the system below roughly 500 microns to remove air and moisture before refrigerant is charged in.

    Moisture left in the lines forms acid that degrades oil and windings. A micron gauge with a decay test is the proof; time-based pump-down without a gauge is not.

    Ventilation (ASHRAE 62.2)

    Air Quality

    ASHRAE 62.2 sets the minimum outdoor air a home needs based on its floor area and number of bedrooms.

    As homes get tighter, natural infiltration no longer supplies that air, so ventilation becomes a designed system rather than an accident of leakiness. ERVs, HRVs, and controlled exhaust fans are the usual ways to meet it.

    Z

    Zoning

    Controls

    Zoning divides a home into independently controlled areas using motorized dampers or separate indoor units.

    Each zone gets its own thermostat and setpoint, which fixes hot-upstairs and cold-downstairs problems one thermostat cannot. Damper zoning requires bypass strategy or variable-speed equipment so airflow stays safe when zones close.
