Garden City is one of Long Island's original planned communities — laid out by Alexander Turney Stewart in 1869 — and the housing stock reflects that unusually long, unusually consistent architectural pedigree. The dominant home is the 1900s–1930s center-hall colonial in the 2,800–5,500 sq ft range, with a heavy overlay of Tudor Revival, English Revival, and Georgian estate architecture in the Estates, Mott, and Eastern sections. Lot sizes range from a quarter acre in the Central section to full-acre and larger parcels in the Estates.
