The homeowner called because the upstairs system hadn't been working right for a couple of days. There were no error codes, no unusual noises and no visible leaks. On site, we also looked at how the cooling equipment drains. The home has two central air systems, and both air handlers sit in a spray-foam-insulated attic, so their condensate drains run above the home's finished ceilings. One of the two air handlers had no overflow protection on its condensate trap.
We opened the condensate traps on both attic air handlers and ran a trap brush through each one. On the air handler that had no overflow protection, we installed a condensate overflow float safety switch on the trap and wired it in. The switch is designed to shut the system off if water backs up in the drain. The visit also included a cooling tune-up with coil cleaning using a no-rinse foam cleaner, algae tablets for the condensate pan and a new MERV 11 pleated filter.
The condensate traps on both attic air handlers have been brushed out. One air handler now has a float safety switch that shuts the system off if its condensate drain backs up, helping protect the ceiling below. The system got a cooling tune-up and a fresh filter, and the homeowner joined our Home+ Comfort Membership, which includes a heating tune-up and a cooling tune-up every year.
