Corroded Air Handler Out, New Central AC In: East Norwich

A new Trane 3-ton condenser outside and a new Goodman air handler inside, replacing a corroded indoor unit.

    After
After: the new Trane 3-ton condenser, level on a new composite pad with an insulated line set. The unit at left wasn't part of this job.

    The problem

The indoor half of this home's central air system was an older Heat Controller air handler, model AHG48-0A. With the front panel off, the evaporator coil and the cabinet base were visibly corroded, and the inside of the unit was dirty and worn. The homeowner chose to replace the whole split system, both the indoor air handler and the outdoor condenser.

    Our solution

Outdoors, we set a new Trane 3-ton condenser on a new 36x36 composite pad. Indoors, a new Goodman air handler replaced the corroded Heat Controller unit, with new insulated supply and return plenums and an air handler plenum adapter kit. The connecting components were all new: a pre-insulated 50 ft refrigerant line set (3/8" x 3/4"), a 60A fused disconnect, a 10 AWG electrical whip, a dedicated 240V double-pole breaker and 18/8 thermostat wire. At the air handler we added a galvanized auxiliary drain pan and a condensate safety float switch. We then removed and disposed of the old equipment, commissioned the system and walked the homeowner through the new setup.

    The result

Outside, the new Trane condenser sits level on its new composite pad, and the insulated line set runs neatly into the wall. Inside, a new Goodman air handler has replaced the corroded unit, and a float switch is in place to shut the system down if the condensate drain ever backs up. The system was commissioned before handoff, and the homeowner got a walkthrough of the new equipment.
