Hempstead's housing is one of the most architecturally diverse in Nassau County — the result of 300+ years of continuous development. The village center holds early 1900s Victorians, four-square colonials, and turn-of-the-century two- and three-family homes, many with original masonry construction and slate roofs. The residential side streets between Front Street and Peninsula Boulevard are dominated by 1920s–40s Tudors, Capes, and colonial revivals in the 1,400–2,600 sq ft range on 40x100 to 50x100 lots. Inland Hempstead sits in a low-elevation heat-island pocket. Dense building stock along the Hempstead Turnpike and Fulton Avenue corridors, limited tree canopy near downtown, and the paved footprint around the Transit Center and Coliseum push measured July condenser-inlet temperatures well above coastal Nassau neighborhoods like Baldwin or Freeport. Older masonry homes in the village hold heat into the evening and stretch AC runtimes 1–2 hours later than south-shore neighbors — which matters for equipment sizing, dehumidification performance, and blower motor selection.

Winters are typical for central Nassau — design temperature around 12°F — and modern cold-climate heat pumps hold nameplate capacity down to that range without electric backup.
