Our Expert Review
Panasonic's Intelli-Balance line is the quietest residential ERV you can buy in North America. At 0.3 sone on low speed, you genuinely cannot hear it running — critical when the unit sits above a bedroom or in a finished basement office. The ECM motors deliver variable airflow with very low electrical consumption, and the cold-climate model with auto-defrost handles Long Island winters without issue. Recovery efficiency (76-78% sensible) trails Zehnder, but you're paying a third of the price. For most Long Island whole-home installs where noise matters and budget is real, this is our default ERV recommendation.
Pros
- Industry-best sound levels — under 0.3 sone at low speed
- ECM motors for variable airflow & low energy use
- Cold-climate ECM with built-in defrost
- Easy access for filter changes
- Strong U.S. distribution & contractor support
- 100 & 200 CFM models cover most homes
Cons
- ERV only — no HRV variant
- Lower recovery efficiency than European competitors
- Plastic core (not metal) — shorter life expectancy
- Limited DIY-friendly controls
