Expert Review: Bosch SSB
The SSB is Bosch's floor-standing, stainless steel condensing boiler for hot-water heating. It is sold under the Buderus name, and Bosch documents list it as the Bosch Buderus SSB. There are three residential sizes: SSB85, SSB120 and SSB160. Input runs from 17,060 BTU/hr at minimum on the SSB85 up to 160,364 BTU/hr on the SSB160, with 5:1 modulation. All three carry an AHRI-certified 96% AFUE. The AHRI net ratings are 69, 96 and 129 MBH.
The heat exchanger is a plasma-welded, single-tube 316L stainless steel coil built to ASME Section IV and rated for 80 psi working pressure. Each boiler ships with a 30 psi relief valve, a manual-reset high limit, and a low-water cutoff with a test button. It runs on natural gas and can be converted to propane in the field. Venting is 2-inch direct vent, as single pipe, twin pipe or concentric, in CPVC, PVC, polypropylene or AL29-4C stainless. Bosch says not to use PVC venting when the heating loop contains antifreeze.
The built-in control includes outdoor reset (an outdoor sensor is included) and can run an indirect hot-water tank. The cabinets are 20 inches deep and 15 3/8 inches wide and weigh 110 to 154 lb dry. The SSB85 is shorter than the SSB120 and SSB160.
Bosch's residential warranty covers the SSB in one- and two-family homes. If the boiler is registered within 90 days, parts are covered for five years, including labor at Bosch's approved rates, and the heat exchanger is covered against leaks for ten years.
