Bosch Heat Pump & Attic Air Handler Replacement in Lake Success
A belt-drive attic air handler and worn AC condenser give way to a matched Bosch heat pump system that heats and cools.
Before
AfterPhotos are lightly enhanced for clarity. The work shown is as installed or serviced.
The problem
The home's cooling equipment was split between the yard and the attic, and both halves were worn out. Outside, the air conditioning condenser had a rusted fan guard, debris collected on top and a weathered disconnect box on the wall. In the attic sat a vintage Chrysler Airtemp air handler built around a belt-and-pulley blower. The blower housing was rusted, the coil was heavily corroded, the cabinet top was water-stained, and the insulation around the duct plenum was torn and coming apart. In an attic, water stains point to moisture reaching the equipment directly above finished ceilings, and torn duct insulation lets attic heat soak into the cooled air before it reaches the living space.
Our solution
We replaced both halves with a matched Bosch system: an IDS 2.0 5-ton inverter heat pump outdoors and a Bosch 5-ton air handler with an ECM blower in the attic. The old attic unit was removed and taken apart. The new cabinet was set level on fresh wood blocking, and the crew fabricated new galvanized sheet-metal transitions and plenum connections, sealed the seams with duct mastic, and wrapped the plenum and connections in foil-faced insulation. A new PVC condensate drain with a trap was run and strapped to blocking, with a drain pan at the unit, and a new refrigerant line set was run to the outdoor unit. We also added a Nest Pro smart thermostat with its room sensor and a MERV 16 whole-home media air cleaner.
The result
The belt-drive attic unit and the old AC condenser are gone, replaced by a matched Bosch heat pump and air handler that both heat and cool. Photographed from the same spot in the attic, the water-stained old cabinet is now a new cabinet with a foil-wrapped plenum, and a neatly piped PVC condensate drain runs along new blocking nearby. The homeowner also has smart thermostat control and whole-home MERV 16 filtration. The installation is backed by a 5-year labor warranty, and the project included a Home+ Comfort Membership with two tune-ups a year.
Installed
- Bosch IDS 2.0 5-Ton Heat Pump, model BOVB60HDN1M18T-HP as recorded (installed, outdoor unit)
- Bosch 5-Ton Air Handler, model BIVA60RCBM20, ECM blower (installed, attic)
- Nest Pro Smart Thermostat, 3H/2C, Wi-Fi, includes sensor (installed)
- MERV 16 whole-home media air cleaner, brand not specified (installed)
- Carrier 38CKC060300 AC condenser (previous outdoor unit on record, replaced)
- Chrysler Airtemp belt-drive air handler, model not legible (removed from attic)
Highlights
- Replaced a vintage Chrysler Airtemp belt-and-pulley attic air handler with a Bosch 5-ton air handler with an ECM blower
- Swapped the outdoor AC condenser for a Bosch IDS 2.0 5-ton inverter heat pump, so the new system both heats and cools
- Fabricated new galvanized transitions, sealed the seams with duct mastic and wrapped the plenum in foil-faced insulation
- New PVC condensate drain with a trap, strapped to blocking, with a drain pan at the attic unit
- Added a Nest Pro smart thermostat with room sensor and a MERV 16 whole-home media air cleaner
- Backed by a 5-year labor warranty, with a Home+ Comfort Membership (two tune-ups a year) included
Scope of work
- 01Removed the old belt-drive air handler from the attic and replaced the outdoor air conditioning condenser
- 02Installed a Bosch IDS 2.0 5-ton heat pump outdoors
- 03Installed a matching Bosch 5-ton air handler in the attic, set level on new wood blocking
- 04Fabricated and fitted new galvanized sheet-metal transitions and plenum connections
- 05Sealed duct seams with mastic and wrapped the plenum and connections in foil-faced insulation
- 06Ran a new PVC condensate drain with a trap, strapped to blocking, with a drain pan at the air handler
- 07Installed a new refrigerant line set
- 08Installed a Nest Pro smart thermostat with room sensor
- 09Installed a MERV 16 whole-home media air cleaner
- 10Included a 5-year labor warranty and a Home+ Comfort Membership
