Daikin Mini-Split Tune-Up and Coil Cleaning in Huntington

A cover-off coil cleaning, filter cleaning and refrigerant top-up for a single-zone Daikin ductless system.

    Before
Inside the cabinet: dry grass and yard debris strewn across the coil, right beside the fan.
    After
The same inside view after cleaning, with the grass and debris cleared from the fins.

    The problem

A single-zone Daikin ductless mini-split in Huntington was due for its routine tune-up. During the inspection, the system's operating pressures were out of line with normal operation, a sign it might be running low on refrigerant. With the top panel and fan grille off, the coil showed how much had built up: the back face was coated with dirt and debris, and dry grass and yard debris were caught on the inside face next to the fan. That kind of buildup restricts airflow through the fins and makes the system work harder.

    Our solution

We started with the part of the unit a quick hose-down never reaches. The top panel and fan grille came off so the coil could be foamed with cleaner and rinsed through. The indoor head's filter screen was cleaned too. With the coil clean and the unit back together, gauges went back on. R-410A refrigerant was added to bring the charge back up, and UV leak-detection dye went in with it so the source of any loss can be traced later.

    The result

The outdoor coil went from coated in dirt and yard debris to clean, open fins, and the indoor filter is clean again. The refrigerant charge was brought back up and the system went back into service. Because a low charge usually points to a leak, UV dye went in with the charge so that, if the level drops again, the source can be found and repaired instead of guessed at.

    Scope of work

    1. 01Inspected the single-zone Daikin mini-split system
    2. 02Removed the outdoor unit's top panel and fan grille for coil access

    4. 04Cleaned the indoor unit's filter screen
    5. 05Reassembled the outdoor unit
    6. 06Connected gauges and checked refrigerant pressures
    7. 07Added R-410A refrigerant to bring the charge back up
    8. 08Added UV leak-detection dye to help trace any leak later
    • Before cleaning: the Daikin outdoor unit on its pad against a cedar-shingle wall.
    • Looking down the back of the unit: the coil face is coated with dirt and debris that restrict airflow through the fins.
    • Top panel and fan grille off, coil cleaner foaming at the base and sprayers ready to go.
    • The same back face after foam cleaning and rinsing: the dirt is gone and the fins are open again.
    • The indoor unit's filter screen, cleaned and set out to dry.
    • Back together on its pad and back in service.
