    The problem

A homeowner in Westbury called because their central air conditioner had stopped working and was making a banging noise. They reported no error codes. Our diagnostic of the outdoor unit, a Rheem condenser that our equipment record shows was installed in 2011, found a faulty compressor contactor and a faulty run capacitor. The old capacitor's terminals were heavily corroded and discolored. The condenser's base pan was also packed with wet leaves and debris around the compressor.

    Our solution

We replaced the compressor contactor with a new Packard definite-purpose contactor and replaced the run capacitor with a new Titan Pro run capacitor. Both replacements included electrical testing. With the fan top lifted off for access, we cleared the leaves and debris out of the base pan, worked foam cleaner through it, and rinsed it clean. The visit also included AC tune-up service.

    The result

New parts replaced the faulty contactor and run capacitor, and the base pan is clean instead of sitting in wet leaves. The contactor is the switch that powers the outdoor unit each time the thermostat calls for cooling, so a failing contactor, or a capacitor with corroded terminals, is worth replacing before it causes more trouble.
