    The problem

The central air in this Westbury home had stopped working and wasn't putting out any cold air. When we looked the system over, we found an older split system on both ends: a Bryant fan coil hanging from chains in the attic, and a Payne outdoor condenser whose nameplate reads "factory charged R-22." R-22 is an older refrigerant that has been phased out of production, and both halves of the system were showing their age.

    Our solution

We replaced both halves of the system. The old fan coil's nameplate reads "Refrigerant 22," so its indoor coil was built for R-22, and a new R-32 condenser needs an indoor coil built for R-32. Outside, the old condenser came out and a new Goodman GLXS3BN condenser went in on a new equipment pad. It's a 13.4 SEER2 single-stage unit that runs on R-32 refrigerant. In the attic, we removed the Bryant fan coil and hung a new Goodman AMST multi-position, multi-speed R-32 air handler with a TXV (the valve that meters refrigerant into the indoor coil). It hangs on chains over a secondary drain pan, with a PVC condensate trap and connections to the attic flex duct. The scope also covered electrical hookups, the refrigerant line connection between the two new units, condensate drain setup, removal and disposal of the old equipment, and commissioning the new system.

    The result

The non-working R-22 equipment is gone, and the home now has a new Goodman R-32 condenser and an R-32 air handler to go with it. The new condenser sits on a new pad in the same spot beside the house. Up in the attic, the new air handler hangs over a drain pan that gives condensate a second place to go if the main drain ever backs up. The installation comes with a 1-year labor warranty.

    Installed

    • Goodman GLXS3BN4210: 13.4 SEER2 single-stage R-32 central AC condenser (installed)
    • Goodman AMST42CU1300: multi-position, multi-speed air handler with TXV, R-32 (installed)
    • Bryant FB4ANF036 fan coil / air handler, refrigerant 22 (removed)
    • Payne outdoor condenser, model PA10JA036-A, factory charged R-22 (removed)

    Highlights

    • Replaced both the outdoor condenser and the attic air handler, because the old indoor coil was built for R-22 and the new condenser runs on R-32
    • Moved the home off an R-22 system (per the old nameplates) and onto R-32 equipment
    • New Goodman GLXS3BN 13.4 SEER2 single-stage condenser set on a new equipment pad
    • New Goodman AMST multi-position, multi-speed air handler with a TXV, hung on chains over a secondary drain pan
    • Old equipment removed and hauled away, and the new system commissioned
    • Backed by a 1-year labor warranty

    Scope of work

    1. 01Removed the old R-22 Payne outdoor condenser
    2. 02Removed the old Bryant fan coil (built for R-22) from the attic
    3. 03Installed a new Goodman GLXS3BN 13.4 SEER2 single-stage R-32 condenser on a new equipment pad
    4. 04Installed a new Goodman AMST multi-position, multi-speed R-32 air handler with TXV, hung on chains in the attic
    5. 05Set the air handler over a secondary drain pan and ran PVC condensate piping with a trap
    6. 06Connected the attic ductwork and electrical, and made the refrigerant line connection between the new indoor and outdoor units
    7. 07Hauled away and disposed of the old equipment
    8. 08Commissioned the new system
    • Before: the original Bryant fan coil hanging on chains in the attic, surrounded by flex duct.
    • The old condenser's nameplate reads "factory charged R-22," a refrigerant that has been phased out of production.
    • Work begins: the old condenser's service panel is off, with tools staged beside it.
    • The new Goodman 13.4 SEER2 R-32 condenser, with the outdoor disconnect and electrical whip beside it.
    • After: the new Goodman air handler hung on chains over a secondary drain pan, with a PVC condensate trap.
