    What this project covers

    A heat pump water heater draws warmth from the air around it to heat a storage tank. It is a water-heating upgrade—not a whole-home heating system. Its location, air volume, electrical supply and condensate drainage matter as much as the model you choose.

    • An eligible ENERGY STAR heat pump water heater for household hot water.
    • A suitable indoor utility space with the manufacturer’s required air volume and clearances.
    • Electrical, plumbing and condensate work evaluated separately as part of the installation quote.

    Before you apply

      Match the eligible model to the utility’s current equipment list before buying.

      Check whether the incentive is taken off at purchase or processed through a participating contractor; do not assume every retailer offers it.

      Con Edison’s published offer has a dated purchase promotion. The finder uses the purchase-date window; confirm the current offer with the administrator.

      PSEG publishes an incentive up to its program maximum, not a guaranteed payment for every tank.

      Installation costs, household demand, tank size and available space should be reviewed before replacing an existing gas or electric tank.

    Common questions

    Is this included in a whole-home heat pump rebate?

    No. Water-heater incentives are a separate equipment program. Do not add the two amounts unless both projects independently qualify and the administrators allow combining them.

    Can it go in any closet?

    No. Heat pump water heaters need adequate air volume or an approved ventilation arrangement, plus service clearances and condensate drainage. Follow the specific model’s installation requirements.

    Should I purchase first and apply later?

    Confirm the eligible model and redemption method first. An instant rebate may require a participating retailer or purchase channel and a qualifying purchase date.
