    Home energy assessments

Start with an energy audit to identify worthwhile improvements before choosing equipment.

    What this project covers

A home energy assessment looks at the building as a system: insulation, air leakage, heating, cooling and other energy uses. It can help distinguish an equipment problem from a building-envelope problem and establish a practical order for improvements. It is not the same as an HVAC repair diagnostic or a promise of a rebate.

    • Review of the home’s energy use and building-envelope conditions.
    • Program-appropriate testing and recommendations by an approved assessment provider.
    • A prioritized improvement plan that may identify eligible efficiency work.

    Before you apply

    1. 01

NYSERDA offers no-cost residential energy assessments for owners of one-to-four-family homes in New York State. Income-eligible homeowners and renters can apply through EmPower+.

    2. 02

An assessment does not guarantee approval of every recommended upgrade or a cash payment.

    3. 03

Rental and multifamily arrangements may require owner consent and a different program pathway.

    4. 04

Confirm what the provider’s assessment includes and whether the selected program covers its cost before scheduling.

    5. 05

Home+ HVAC estimates and diagnostics are separate from a program-approved whole-home energy audit.

    Your next steps

    2. 02

      Prepare your information

    3. 03

      Review recommendations

Ask which improvements are eligible, which need approvals, and what costs remain before committing to equipment or building work.

    Common questions

Is an energy audit the same as a tune-up?

No. A tune-up services equipment. A whole-home assessment evaluates energy use and the building envelope and may recommend several types of improvement.

Does an audit automatically unlock a rebate?

No. It identifies opportunities. Each funding program separately verifies the household, property, proposed measures and application.

Where do I arrange a program assessment?

Start with the official NYSERDA program information and its approved providers. Home+ is not advertising a program-approved whole-home audit service here.
